Offering riff-heavy party rock, complemented by strong female vocals, Poor Moxi brings an exciting new sound to the alternative genre. Combining the tight composition of influences like Muse and Arctic Monkeys with indie feel-good elements of groups like Cage the Elephant and The Strokes, the Denver-based five-piece makes music to get people moving. Poor Moxi formed in 2016, under the leadership of frontwoman Megan Maher and lead guitarist Kyle Youngman. Later in the year, the duo recruited bassist Brody Esslinger and rhythm guitarist Jalon Baxter, and quickly wrote several catchy originals that caught the attention of their alt-rock-loving friends.
In early 2018, Poor Moxi released their self-titled EP and began preparing for their first gig, but without a permanent drummer. Desperate for a tight fill-in, Youngman contacted Patrick Bodnar, who would become a permanent member soon after.
Poor Moxi played at a series of notable venues during the Summer of 2018, drawing a crowd of over 60 people to their debut at Herman’s Hideaway, and going on to play such local hubs as The Walnut Room and Globe Hall. Their EP became a streaming hit, with every song reaching 1000 Spotify streams in a few months. Poor Moxi is planning to release new originals in 2019.
